Rolling Thunder
Nearly 400 motorcycles rolled into Cocke County on Tuesday as part of the 30th Annual Rolling Thunder Run For The Wall. The loud entourage was escorted by the Cocke County Sheriff's Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Cheryl "Sweet Thing" Stokely, is an Advance Team Leader who is responsible for the motorcycle staging and re-fueling. She told the NewsSource that 400 motorcycles can be re-fueled in 15 minutes. Stokley is from San Antonio, Texas. "We have 387 registered riders from all over the country. We meet in los Angeles and have three routes we follow to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington." Stokley says there is one mission for the ride. "Our mission is to bring healing to those who have been in war and are struggling. We also visit VA hospitals, as well as museums and schools on the trip. We also are raising awareness for POW/Mia's. There are currently more than 83,000 soldiers that are unaccounted for and we want our government to bring them home." The cycles plan to be in Washington on Memorial Day for a ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Rolling Thunder participants were hosted by Harold Cates at his Downtown Hartford Citgo. Although he has never been on a motorcycle, Cates is enthusiastic about his role as host of the entourage. "We were selected as the East Tennessee stop for the Run for the Wall and we are enthusiastic to have them for the fifth year. They seem to enjoy the quiet area we have here. We have gifts and free gas for them, and we are very proud to host this group." The cycles left Hartford headed east, escorted by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
