Shelton pursuit and arrest
A Newport is in custody following a Tuesday evening pursuit by Newport police. Patrol Officer Joshyua Shults said he tried to stop Richard Walter Shelton, 57, Melrose Way, Newport, after he saw the subject run a stop sign on Crowe lane at 9 pm. Shelton ignored lights and siren until he wrecked his 1999 Honda Accord on Epley Road. His passenger, Jacquelyn Dickerson, 21, Goldenrod Way, Newport, told officers that she had begged Shelton to allow her to leave the car during the chase but he refused. Officer Shults said Dickerson "was obviously terrorized by the experience." After the crash, Shelton refused to leave his vehicle and had to be forcibly removed by police and Cocke County deputies. The driver who has an extensive criminal history faces charges of Aggravated Kidnapping, Fleeing to Evade, Running a Stop Sign, Stolen Plates, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment, Failure to Exercise Due Care, Resisting Arrest and Driving on a Revoked License. The report indicates both occupants of the vehicle were injured in the crash.
