Smelly South Highway 321
A four-mile stretch of South Highway 321 in Cocke County was a smelly mess for much of Wednesday. A Waste Industries truck was southbound at 5:30 am when he began losing garbage from the rear hatch of his truck near Carvers Orchard. The dumping continued till the truck entered the parking lot of the Smoky Mountain Elementary school, where the rest of the load was dumped on the ground, according to Deputy Lt. Michael Whitmer of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. "It was either driver error or an electrical malfunction," Lt. Whitmer said of the incident resulted in a day-long cleanup. The garbage had just been picked up from Newport restaurants and motels. Both the southbound and northbound lanes of the highway were blocked for some time, for a distance. Waste Industries sent a crew to assist with the cleanup. TDOT sent equipment, along with the Cocke County Jail litter crew and the sheriff's department. The cleanup was completed at about 5:15 pm.
