School safety evaluation is complete Members of the Cocke County School Board heard an update Thursday evening on a safety evaluation of local schools. Assistant Director of Schools and Safety Director Casey Kelly, said a safety evaluation of schools in the system has been completed. Because of recent school shootings, state education officials are requiring an upgrade to efforts to protect students and teachers. "We went through all the building and categorized them as one through four, as to the threat level. We then did an evaluation consisting of 90 to 100 questions based on the threat level," he told the board. According to Kelley, the state has a total of $35 million appropriated for school safety and Cocke County expects to receive about $53,000 to enhance local safety No major safety issues were found, but Kelley said some very expensive issues have not yet been addressed. The board hopes to use the funding to hire a safety officer for each school, because currently there are only three School Resource Officers for all 11 schools in the system. Aubry Strange, a Cocke County High graduate, was recognized as this year's Niswonger Scholarship recipient. She plans to study Public Relations at Samford University and then return to Cocke County to work in non-profit organizations. The board approved a plan by Rural Medical Services to provide health services at the two local high schools. Medical personnel will be at each school one-half day weekly. A clinic is currently available at Cocke County High and a portable clinic will be parked at Cosby High for use by medical personnel. Board members are expected to approve a new attendance policy and to consider re-naming the alternative programs in the system at a subsequent meeting. Because the final numbers are not yet available for the 2018/19 budget, the school board will meet again on June 21 and 28 to finalize the budget.
