Funds remain to assist in downtown beautification
The Keep Cocke County Beautiful(KCCB) Board of Directors was told Friday that funding is still available for downtown businesses who want to beautify the facade of their building. Newport City Planner Gary Carver said the Facade Awards program provides up to $1,000 in matching funds for upgrading permanent fixtures such as awnings, painting, pressure washing, repair of broken windows etc. of a building. But the owner must apply for the matching money before doing the rehabilitation work. The city has $10,000 in it's budget to assist in efforts to upgrade the appearance of downtown, and the money is distributed through the KCCB office. Board members also were told that two community residents have been awarded the PRIDE designation for the work they have done to beautify their areas. Tom Huffman was recognized for his ongoing efforts to keep Rankin Bottoms clean, and Pam Proffitt was lauded for her efforts to beautify the Bogard community.
