Suicide is up in Tennessee
The Centers for Disease Control has issued a new report on suicide, reporting the suicide rate in Tennessee is above the national average. Last week, two American celebrities, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, took their own lives days. Here in Tennessee suicide is up by 24 percent according to the CDC There are two groups that are especially impacted: white men between the ages of 45 and 64, as well as young people 10 to 24 years old. Researchers estimate that every 108 minutes, a young person aged 10 to 24 dies. They say education is the most important aspect of addressing suicide. Getting over the stigma of not wanting to talk about suicide. Psychologists are trying to encourage those who are depressed to understand that It's ok to reach out and to say “I'm struggling. Can you help me?" Those who are depressed with thoughts of suicide are urged to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which is free and confidential. That number is 1-800-273-8255.
