Keeping families together
U.S. President Donald Trump's abrupt reversal Wednesday,in a volatile immigration crisis resulted from pressure by close family members, friends and lawmakers who urged him to backaway from his deeply unpopular hardline immigration policy. As recently as Monday, Trump was vowing to stick to a policy that led to children being separated from their parents when they crossed illegally into the United States from Mexico. Before the president backed away from his policy, Senator Bob Corker and other lawmakers had introduced the Keep Families Together and Enforce the Law Act, which would have kept families together while ensuring the integrity of the nation’s immigration laws. But that legislation was oppossed by a number of Republicans and did not have the votes for passage. Said Corker, “Separating children from their parents is not something any of us want to see. President Trump was right to issue an executive order that keeps families together once they cross the border into the U.S. In fact, the House is preparing to vote on a comprehensive bill that will codify this policy. But the President is also right that what led to this crisis is the selective enforcement of our immigration laws, which has encouraged thousands of families trying to come into our country illegally. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said , “Families need to stay together whenever possible while an immigration judge determines whether they can stay legally in our country. The president’s executive order is an encouraging step toward dealing with a very difficult set of circumstances in a humanitarian way.” Republican Congressman Phil Roe of the First District said , “ Separating children from their parents is not something any of us want to see. President Trump was right to issue an executive order that keeps families together once they cross the border into the U.S. In fact, the House is preparing to vote on a comprehensive bill that will codify this policy.
