Fines Creek rescue
The Newport Rescue Squad assisted in the rescue of an individual on Thursday who was injured at a swimming hole in the Fines Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Dana Soehn, Assistant/Public Affairs Manager for the Park said at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Park Emergency Communications Center was notified that a 21-year old male was injured at the Midnight Hole area along the Big Creek Trail. Park Rangers and Emergency Responders from the Backcountry Search and Rescue Team, Haywood County, Grassy Fork, and Fines Creek all responded. responded. The subject was conscious and alert when the team arrived on the scene but had to be carried some distance to the waiting ambulance. Captain Clifton Valentine of the Newport Rescue Squad said the injured man was transported back to the trailhead with the squad's six-wheel all-terrain vehicle.
