Perez body recovery
The body of Hector Guillermo Mercado Perez, 24, Norton, VA was located at approximately 7:30 pm Saturday in Douglas Lake by a TWRA investigator using an underwater Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV). The body was recovered by a diver with the Jefferson Co. Rescue Squad, according to Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agent Matthew Cameron. At about 3:30 pm on July 4, Perez went missing while he was swimming from a pontoon boat on the lake. Witnesses on board the boat said the victim swam away from the boat several feet and began to struggle prompting a male passenger on the boat to enter the water to make a rescue attempt which was unsuccessful. "The victim went under the water and never resurfaced. The man who made the rescue attempt has been treated for some medical issues and is expected to be OK," Cameron said. Rescue Squad crews from five counties, along with the ROV, were involved in the search.
