Farm tractors destroyed in fire
Major damage resulted to new farm tractors, in an early Sunday morning fire on Interstate 40 in Cocke County. Cocke County Firefighter Justin Shelton said the 6:12 am incident occurred in the westbound lanes near the 442 milemarker, when the passenger side axle of a trailer caught fire. Driver Matt Hertel, Pickers, South Carolina said he spotted the flames, pulled off the roadway and attempted to extinguish the fire with his fire extinguisher. When he was unsuccessful, Hertel unhooked the trailer from his tractor and pulled away from the fire. He contacted other truckers for assistance but they could not control the flames. Shelton said two of the four-wheel drive, medium-sized farm tractors were destroyed, one sustained moderate damage and one of the tractors was saved from the flames. The loss of the tractors and trailer totals $180,000. Cosby Volunteer Fire Department personnel also were on the scene battling the flames. The Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the incident.
