Gibson arrest
A 70 year-old Cocke County woman faces numerous charges following an early morning shooting incident involving dogs. Cocke County Deputy Daniel Smith said Laurell Marie Gibson, Johnson Street, Newport, argued with her daughter, 42 year-old Lorrie Gibson about cleaning the house they share. Also on hand was another resident of the home, Angelyn Newman, 35. The elder Gibson left the home after the argument, retrieved a handgun and returned at 12:25 am. She entered the garage area fatally shooting three dogs and wounding two other dogs. The suspect then fled the area, firing the pistol out the window of the auto. Deputy Lt. Bob Schaff spotted the fleeing vehicle on Carson Springs Road and attempted a traffic stop but Ms. Gibson fled. Deputy Smith was able to pass the suspect and maneuvered his patrol car in front of the fleeing vehicle stopping her advance. Officer Smith then ordered the woman from her car at gunpoint and recovered the handgun from under the driver's seat. Ms. Gibson was jailed on charges of Reckless Endangerment Involving a Deadly Weapon, Possession of Another Weapon, Cruelty To Animals and Evading Arrest. The two injured dogs were transported to an animal hospital, where because of their serious injuries, they had to be euthanized.
