West Virginians arrested in Jeff County robberies
Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. Bud McCoig announced Thursday that a male and female wanted in several robberies in that county have been arrested by West Virginia authorities. Charged are Josh Small, 50, and Joni Johnson 35, both of Priceton, West Virginia. The sheriff said the couple was allegedly involved in the Aggravated Robbery and Aggravated Kidnapping of two residents in Jefferson County; Clyde Moore, 82 on June 29 and Roy Ledbetter, 72 on July 2. Both victims were tied up and robbed of money and weapons. The sheriff said the investigation connected his officers to officers in Campbell County where the same suspects allegedly tied up and robbed a 77 year-old female on June 27. Photos from different locations and a description of the robbers from the victims resulted in the local officers looking for a late model black four-door Chevy. On July 6, Small and Johnson allegedly robbed an 88 year-old man in Giles County, Virgina. And they continued to rob other victims in Virginia and West Virginia. All of the incidents were tied together through the same vehicle. McCoig said West Virginia authorities on Thursday took Small into custody after staking out his home. They also confiscated his auto which had been used in the crimes. "We are very proud that these two dangerous criminals are off the street,” he said. According to the sheriff, Small is a convicted felon who served a sentence for similar offenses in West Virginia. He has been out of prison for just over a year. Small now is awaiting extradition to Tennessee, and Johnson also is expected to be extradited to face the Tennessee charges.
