TDOT public hearing The Tennessee Department of Transportation held a public hearing Thursday evening to inform Cocke Countians of the alternative plans for South Highway 321 improvements. More than 200 residents attended the meeting at the National Guard Armory, hosted by Public Information Officer Mark Nagi. Those in attendance were told that two routes are being considered for improvements to the road between the Wilton Springs Road and the Hooper Highway. One of the routes would follow the current route but remove the sharp curves, ending at the intersection with the Hooper Highway. The other route, while traveling south, would move to the west just past the Indian Camp Creek Road intersection. That alternative would continue south, to the west of Stonebrook Village and connect with the Hooper Highway further south. The plan is to four-lane either alternative route, to the Hooper Highway. There is a third alternative...the "no-build" alternative, which would leave the road as it is. The audience was told the project is currently in the environmental stage, with technical studies continuing. And it likely will be six years before construction gets underway. Another hearing likely will be held next year as the planning continues, before the route is finalized.
