Cocke County traffic fatality
A Sevier County man died Thursday in a two-vehicle crash on South Highway 321 in Ccoke County. The 5:15 pm collision occurred just south of Janice's Diner. Trooper Andrew Marotta said the collision claimed the life of Andrew Marcus, 54 of Sevierville. Marcus was traveling northbound when he crossed the center line in a curve and struck Randy Scott Pluta, 66, Orangeburg, South Carolina who was southbound. The Marcus 2013 Hyundai came to rest in the roadway, and the driver who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. The 2017 Honda SUV operated by Pluta left the roadway and went down a 15 foot embankment coming to rest in the Cosby Creek in two to three feet of water. Pluta and his wife, Angela, 64, both were trapped in the vehicle and had to extricated by first responders. The Pluta couple were wearing their seatbelts. Cocke County Firefighter Robert Cashen said emergency personnel used a ladder to bring the Pluta couple up the embankment to a waiting First Call EMS ambulance. Both then were taken to the National Guard Armory where they met a medical helicopter and were flown to the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Pluta today is in the intensive care unit and Ms. Pluta is in stable condition. Cosby Volunteer Fire personnel and Newport Rescue Squadsmen, along with Cocke County deputies participated in the rescue as well. The roadway was blocked for sometime after the crash.
