Cocke Grand Jury indictments
A Cocke County Grand Jury meeting this week returned a number of indictments as well as sealed presentments. Laurel Gibson is charged with three counts each, Intentional Killing Of An Animal and Aggravated Cruelty To Animals, Reckless Endangerment With A Deadly Weapon, Unlawful Possession Of A Weapon, Evading Arrest By Motor Vehicle and Violation Of The Registration Law. On July 12, Gibson, 70, Johnson Street, Newport, argued with her daughter, Lorrie Gibson about cleaning the house they share. The elder Gibson left the home after the argument, retrieved a handgun and entered the garage area fatally shooting three dogs and wounding two other dogs. The suspect then fled the area, firing the pistol out the window of the auto. Deputy Daniel Smith was able to pass the suspect and maneuvered his patrol car in front of the fleeing vehicle stopping her advance. He ordered the woman from her car at gunpoint and recovered the handgun from under the driver's seat. The two injured dogs were transported to an animal hospital, where because of their serious injuries, they had to be euthanized. Amanda Murphy, 27, Bobcat Ridge Way, Cosby, is charged in the May 24 robbery and assault of Amber Renee Sane, who reported she was in her home on Country View Way, Newport when Murphy and another female entered and assaulted her with their fists. Lamar Deshawn Woods, 23, White Oak Avenue, Newport, is charged with four counts Kidnapping, Reckless Endangerment With A Deadly Weapon, Evading Arrest and a number of traffic violations. Deborah Jodlowsky had reported her 2012 Nissan Xterra stolen from Grainger County in January but several days later spotted it in Cocke County. Lt. Mike Whitmer pursued the Xterra on Armory Road at speeds near 100 miles per hour. Woods nearly collided with the cruiser of Sgt. Hollis Emmons on the Cosby Road, and then avoided spike strips deployed by Deputy Chris Barnes. A short time later, the subject swerved off the roadway and allowed four passengers to exit the auto, one of whom claimed to be pregnant. All said they had begged Woods to allow them to leave the auto, and they appeared fearful. As he sped, Woods lost control at the intersection of the Cosby Road and Hooper Highway, striking two vehicles stopped at the stop sign. At that point Woods fled from the stolen auto on foot. But after a foot pursuit, he was forcibly restrained and arrested. Woods now faces charges of Theft over $10,000, Evading Arrest, four counts Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment with a Weapon(vehicle), Reckless Driving, Failure to maintain lane, Running a Stop Sign and Speeding. He also is charged with the assault of Charlie McNabb, Jimmy Phillips, Cody Johnson and Christopher Wilson while being held in the jail. In addition, the subject also is charged with escape for leaving a drug rehab facility in Knoxville. Brian Arwood, 39, and Jasmine Prevost, 25, both of Filbert Street, Newport, are charged with Aggravated Robbery and Aggravated Burglary in connection with a February 11th. incident involving Thomas Edwards. Edwards was taken to the Newport Medical Center after he was allegedly attacked with a large hunting knife, and knocked to the floor after going to a party "basically to do drugs", he told police. A number of Cocke County jail inmates also are indicted on charges they assaulted other inmates in the facility. James Lee Hall, 28, English Mountain Road, Newport is charged with the assault of James Allen Murphy while in jail on April 2. Scott Elliott Wardley, 28, Knoxville is charged with the assault of two individuals, Christopher Wilson and Jimmy Phillips, while he was in jail in June. Glenn Anthony Mantooth, no age or address available, is charged in the April 4 assault of Kenith Ball, while Mantooth was in custody. William Lee Davis, 33, Wells Drive, Newport and Timothy Jordan, 27, Buda Street, Newport, are charged in an assault on inmate C. Toby. His injuries sent Toby to the Newport Medical Center for treatment. Jordan also is charged with assaulting inmate Luke Gibson the same day by hitting, kicking and kneeing him.
