Newport/Parrottsville candidates Noon on Thursday was the deadline for candidates to qualify for the November 6 election in Newport and Parrottsville. Cocke County Election Administrator Josh Blanchard released the list of those who met the qualifying deadline. Those who qualified for Newport mayor, to succeed Newport Mayor Connie Ball who is not seeking re-election are; Roland "Trey" Dykes III, Jeff Fancher and Claude Gattlin. The candidates who qualified for an Alderman seat on the five-member Newport City Council are; Bill Costner, Mike Hansel, Bobby J. Knight, Louanna Ottinger, Mike Aaron Proffitt, Steve Smith, Jeff Stokely and Don F. Wise. Jan Brooks-Sneed and Malcolm A. (Mickey) Powers are seeking re-election to their seats on the Newport School Board for four-year terms. David J. Perryman is seeking election to the seat on the Newport School Board, to which he was recently appointed following the death of Charlotte Mims. The three current members of the Parrottsville City Commission also are seeking re-election to their seats; Thad Balch, Douglas Dewayne "Doodle" Daniel and Ronnie Hommel. Following the election, the members of the Parrottsville City Commission will choose a Mayor, which in the past has been the member who received the highest number of votes. The incumbents on the Newport School Board and the Parrottsville City Commission have no opposition in the election.
