Cureton receives 14 year sentence
A Cocke County woman who gave birth to a child while in federal custody, has been sentenced to a 14 year prison term in connection with a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Amanda Lee Cureton, 34, Centerview Street, Newport, had been under house arrest for the last eight months to care for her child but now will have to surrender to federal charges to serve the 14 year sentence. The defendant will be required to serve at least 85 percent of the term before she is eligible for parole. In December of last year, Cureton pleaded guilty in Jefferson County Criminal Court to the Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution, Possession of Methamphetamine with the Intent to Sell and Deliver, as well as Possession of Clonazepam, Marijuana and Suboxone. She was arrested at a White Pine motel on charges of possession of Opana, methamphetamine, marijuana and suboxone, a handgun and drug paraphernalia. Judge Duane Slone gave Cureton an eight-year sentence, she was ordered to serve 150 days and the balance will be on probation. Then while in jail in September, 2017, the inmate was found to have hidden a quantity of methamphetamine in her navel, leading to the Introduction charge.
