Newport home fire
Newport investigators are trying to determine the cause of an early morning Sunday fire which heavily damaged a city home. Newport Fire Chief Randy Ragan said firefighters were called to the Doris Hicks home on Eighth Street at 3:48 am. "The initial fire was in a detached garage, and there was a vehicle inside the garage. Both the garage and the vehicle were destroyed, and the fire then spread to the home," the chief said. The flames spread to the exterior of the home and destroyed one of the bedrooms. Because of the heavy damage to the garage, Chief Ragan said Newport Fire Inspector Jeremy Shelton has been unable to determine the cause of the fire. Smoke alarms in the home sounded and allowed the occupants to escape unharmed. The total loss including the 2005 Infinity, is placed at $70,000.
