Flooding is predicted
The National Weather Service says heavy rains in Western North Carolina in recent days could mean flooding from the French Broad and Pigeon Rivers in Cocke County. "Flood stage for the French Broad is 10 feet and we are expecting it to rise to 11 feet. The Pigeon River also is rising and we expect all of the rivers in the area to rise," says meteorologist Mary Black of the National Weather Service in Morristwn. She says the rising water is not the result of local rains, but from heavier rains in North Carolina from Hurricane Florence, that is working its way down the rivers. The risk of flooding continues through today.
