Newport East Broadway Update Clint W. Hammonds, Water Works Manager for Newport Utilities announced Friday that crews have successfully completed installation of new water and wastewater piping and paving on East Broadway through Baer Ave. On Friday road signs and fencing were removed to fully open traffic on Broadway. On Monday work will move to the east side of Baer Ave in front of Food City, resulting in the closure of one lane of traffic. Work will continue to progress eastward to Iris Place. Once through the Iris Place intersection, work will be confined to shoulders east to Lincoln Avenue, allowing for minimal interference with traffic. Water meter installation is to be completed over three or four evenings next week. The work will be off the roadway and will be conducted after business hours to prevent disruption to water flow. Then the following week, the remaining mainline tie-ins are planned for the evening hours. Concrete sidewalk repair will follow. All of the activities should be complete in the downtown area prior to the October 6 and 7 Harvest Street Festival.
