Stanley fatality
A Cocke County woman lost her life Saturday afternoon when her car left Rock Hill Road and struck a tree east of Newport. Trooper Toby Cameron identified the victim as Janet L. Stanley, 56, of Newport. The 1:46 pm incident occurred when Stanley, northbound in a 2006 Honda, lost control left the roadway on the left side and struck a tree. Officer Cameron said both the front and side airbags deployed on impact. Stanley was not wearing a seat belt but Trooper Cameron said in his opinion, a safety restraint would not have made a difference. The officer said tests have been ordered to determine if alcohol or controlled substances were contributing factors to the crash. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 17, 2018 with funeral services following at 2:00 pm in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Paul Moore. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. Arrangements by Manes Funeral Home.
