A Newport woman was injured Sunday morning when she was struck by a train as she attempted to cross the railroad tracks east of downtown Newport. Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults identified the pedestrian as Alisha Arrington, 31, Jimtown Road, Newport. The chief said Arrington was crossing the tracks near Tabor Street, east of the Conagra plant. There was not a grade crossing at the location of the incident. Norfolk Southern spokeswoman Susan Terpay said the incident at about 8 am involved an eastbound train pulling 99 cars of coal. Arrington was flown to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville where today she is listed in stable condition.
