Greene County fire fatality
Greene County authorities say 911 was alerted at 2:33 pm on Saturday, of a structure fire on Bright Hope Rd. The caller stated the double-wide structure had burnt overnight and that the owner was possibly still inside. Greene County Sheriff Wesley Holt said units from Caney Branch and Orebank Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene to find the structure completely on the ground and smoldering. "The location of the residence being some distance from the roadway and surrounded by hills were factors in the lack of an earlier report regarding the blaze," the sheriff said. Human remains found in what appeared to be the kitchen area, were identified as William E. “Bill” Johnson, 83, the homeowner and only resident of the home. Mr. Johnson was last seen alive by his caregiver who left the residence around 10:30 pm Friday. Investigators with the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office and detectives with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death and to make a positive identification.
