First Baptist Church fire
An electrical fire in a utility room of First Baptist Church in Newport led to the cancellation of services Sunday morning. Newport firefighters, Newport Utilities and Jefferson/Cocke County Gas Utility personnel responded to the church on East Broadway at about 10 am. Dr. Rich Lloyd, minister of the church, said there was a small electrical fire in the electrical room. "The fire department put it out, everyone got out of the church, and we are waiting for the electric company to turn off the electricity. Everybody is safe." The pastor said the fire was not the result of any cooking or use of the kitchen. "We are getting the smoke out and we will have some cleaning up to do. Unfortunately, we have no power and so we are not having church today." Newport Battalion Chief Eric Herndon said the fire was confined to a utility box, but repairs will be extensive. He estimated the damage at $10,000.
