Cocke County School Board
Members of the Cocke County School Board, meeting Thursday, approved an architect's plan for Phase II of the plan to upgrade the auditorium at Cocke County High School. That renovation project is a part of the school's 100th. Anniversary celebration. Assistant Director Casey Kelley said more than $100,000 has been raised toward the $300,000 cost of Phase II, and the fundraiser is continuing. The move also included funding the needed new seating under a state bid, the lowest price available. Kelley said the community needs that venue. "This is not just Cocke County High School's auditorium, it's the only place in Cocke County that is large enough to hold any group over 500 people. It's pretty critical that we get that finished and get that off our list of things to do so we can move on to some other things." The auditorium renovation project is expected to be completed by May 2019. Kelly also announced that funding under the Governor's Safety program will be used to replace a number of metal doors in several schools, some of which will have a cost of $10,000 to $12,000 each. Federal Programs Supervisor, Kathy Holt, announced that Grassy Fork Elementary School has been chosen as one of only two schools statewide, as a National Elementary and Secondary Education Distinguished School. "It is a very big deal," she told the board. "This is an annual recognition, and they are being recognized for their academic accomplishments for two consecutive years. We are working on who would like to go to the awards ceremony. The spotlight will be on these two schools, and I can't emphasize enough what an honor it is to be selected for this award." The board granted approval for travel for local representatives from the school to attend the award ceremony in late January, in Kansas City. The second school from Tennessee is in Kingsport. Holt also reported that the system has been chosen for a grant to address student mental health issues. The funding will be used to provide student access to those services as well as providing leadership skills training for students. The body also approved the purchase of five school buses at a cost of $489,595 from Mid South Bus Sales.
