Cocke County Grand jury indicts several
A Cocke County Grand Jury this week indicted a number of individuals and returned 16 sealed presentments. Earnest Ray King, 38, English Street, Newport, is charged with attempted second degree murder and especially aggravated burglary. In November 2018, Newport officers responded to a Tabor Street home to find a resident, George Millington, 41, with a stab wound to the side. King had allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Millington. King then fled the scene on foot. Millington was flown to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment. William Luther Gregg, 50, Hummingbird Way, Newport, is charged in a February 2017 assault of Albert Gibson, 67, Bay Mountain Road, who was found down a 34-foot embankment, bleeding from a head injury and also suffering from hypothermia, on Rocky Top Road. Gibson had been down the embankment for at least several hours, he had no wallet on his person and there was no vehicle found at the scene. He was later flown to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. Gregg is charged with attempted first degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and theft over $40,000. Chad Stebbins, 30, Hot Springs, NC, and Melissa Mae Hill, 34, Mars Hill, NC, are charged with aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, aggravated assault, theft, and vandalism. They are charged in the assault of Joah Evans, Arden, North Carolina on Pond Curve Way, Newport. Evans said he went to the location to get a tattoo in November 2018. He reported the defendants held a gun to his head and then demanded cash and drugs. Evans also said he was beaten by the robbers. Clinton Cartwright,26, Sevierville, involved in a lengthy pursuit in October faces a number of charges. Trooper Paul Kilday chased Cartwright from Newport, into Jefferson and Sevier Counties before he was arrested back in Newport after spike strips were used to flatten the tires on Cartwright's car. He is indicted on charges of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, evading arrest by motor vehicle, second offense DUI, reckless endangerment, driving on a revoked license, reckless driving. theft and a number of additional driving violations. Four local persons are charged in the December 15 burglary of the Newport home of Attorney Derrick Whitson on Moore Street, in which a safe, coin collection, TVs, jewelry and swords were taken. Those charged with Aggravated Burglary and Theft over $10,000 are; John Daniel Ross,29, homeless; Trinity Sells,40, Fairview Street; Charles Mullins, 53, Woodlawn Avenue and Tennia Ball, 42, Reese Hollow Road, Del Rio. Christopher Caulder, 43, and Shana Jackson, 38, Dunn Cemetary Road, Newport are charged with possession of methamphetamine with the intent to sell and deliver, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and child endangerment.
