Holt/Morris arrest
Newport police arrested one man Sunday morning after he allegedly paid a woman to blow into the ignition interlock device on his auto, so he was able to drive. Patrol Officer Brandon Cassidy said he responded to a crash on North Street near Knowles market at about 1 am, to find a crashed 2009 Honda. Chloe Williams, 17, Warford Road, Newport told Officer Cassidy that she was driving the vehicle when the owner, Lance Holt, 22, College Street, Newport began slapping her face and then grabbed the steering wheel of the auto, because she refused to drive to his home. The vehicle left the roadway, struck an embankment and rolled at about 1 am. Williams sustained facial lacerations and bruises, and may also have sustained a concussion. Holt who sustained minor injuries was found lying on a nearby lawn in a very intoxicated condition. Williams said she was driving the Holt vehicle because he was too intoxicated to drive. Further investigation revealed that Holt had paid Tasha Morris, 25, Alex Street, Newport, $5.00 to blow into the ignition interlock device so he could drive the vehicle. Morris admitted she rode with Holt as he drove to the Williams home to pick up the teen. Holt was jailed on charges of domestic assault, reckless endangerment, child endangerment, DUI, and driving while a restriction was in effect. Morris faces charges of DUI by consent, driving while a restriction is in effect and child endangerment.
