Drug baby legislation
Tennessee lawmakers are re-considering a law that charges mothers with assault if their babies are born dependent to drugs. Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver introduced a bill that has a sunset clause allowing it to expire after two years. The lawmaker is bringing it back with a focus on getting addicted mothers to enter a drug court program. If she successfully completes the program, the mother will notface charges. "They get their life back. They get their children back. They have a job," said the lawmaker. “There (are) a lot of testimonies That is why I applaud the drug courts." Rep. Weaver says the modification will bring more attention to the increasing number of women who give birth to babies addicted to drugs. The lawmaker said there is no sunset clause in her new bill. There were concerns with the previous bill that pregnant woman shied away from prenatal care out of concern they would be charged with assault if their baby was born addicted to drugs.
