Fine pursuit
A vehicle pursuit early Sunday morning resulted in the arrest of Clifford Fine, 26, Lower English Creek Road, Newport. Deputy Lt. Michael Whitmer said he saw Fine driving erratically on North Highway 321 and pursued him onto Rock Hill Road, Old Ashville Highway and East Highway 25/70 as the auto passed other vehicles on the wrong side of the road and at speeds up to 90 miles per hour. Eventually, as the auto prepared to enter I-40, Lt. Whitmer forced the auto off the roadway. Although Fine attempted to flee on foot, he was captured nearby. Fine claimed not to be the driver after the 2:16 am arrest, however pursuit video footage showed him to be the operator. Other occupants of the auto were released. Now Fine faces charges of evading arrest, resisting arrest, reckless driving, reckless endangerment with a vehicle, speeding, no insurance, driving on a revoked license and other traffic violations. He also was wanted on charges of unlawful carrying of a weapon and fraudulent use of a credit card
