South Highway 32 crash
One man was injured seriously and two women sustained minor injuries in a single vehicle crash on South Highway 32 just before 9 pm on Saturday in Cocke County. The Tennessee Highway Patrol says Mark Theroit, 54 of Cosby lost control of his 2005 Honda Pilot which went down a 40 foot embankment. The vehicle struck a tree, rolling onto it's side, and partially ejecting the driver who was wearing his seatbelt. Cocke County firefighters, Cosby Volunteer firemen, Newport Rescue squadsmen and Cocke County Sheriffs deputies had to utilize airbags and cut a portion of the sunroof from the auto to free the driver whose head was partially pinned under the vehicle. Emergency personnel had to carry the injured driver up the embankment to a waiting First Call EMS ambulance, and Theroit was later flown to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. The injured driver "admitted to drinking earlier in the evening, and had a strong odor of alcohol about him," according to the highway patrol. He was charged with his third offense DUI. The two females, Clara Louise Cupp, Bybee and Mary Shoemaker, Newport, sustained minor injuries.
