TennCare blockgrants
One day after 30 organizations signed a letter opposing a Republican proposal to pursue Medicaid funding through a block grant, a House finance committee quickly approved the measure on Wednesday. The bill requires Gov. Bill Lee to meet with federal officials to request a block grant for TennCare, the state's Medicaid program. The day before, more than two dozen organizations, including the YWCA, the Council on Aging and the United Ways of Tennessee, signed onto a letter criticizing the legislation. "Our organizations are deeply concerned by proposals to use the Medicaid waiver process to make changes that would adversely impact individuals," the letter says. The groups said obtaining a block grant could lead to the elimination of federal consumer protections, threaten the health care coverage of Tennesseans and remove financial security safeguards. The groups say a waiver would radically alter TennCare and potentially endanger the public. Supporters of the proposal say block grants would provide greater flexibility to determine how the state can spend federal money allocated for health insurance. Opponents warn the proposal could lead to less funding for the state, pointing to President Donald Trump's latest proposal to cut Medicaid spending by $1.5 trillion over a 10-year period.
