Greene crash
A Cocke County woman was injured Thursday afternoon when her auto plunged off a seven foot high retaining wall in Newport. Newport Patrol Officer Chris Silvers said the incident occurred in the parking lots of the Burger King and Arby's restaurants on the Cosby Road at 2:46 pm. Martha Virginia Greene, 74, Tobacco Way, Hartford was operating the 1999 Buick when it went through the grass at the Burger King Restaurant, crashed through a chain-link fence and plunged off the retaining wall, coming to rest in the Arby's restaurant parking lot. Ms. Greene told police she inadvertently hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal as she pulled into a parking space. The driver told Fierst Call EMS personnel that she hit the steering wheel on impact, injuring her chest. Newport Fire Department personnel had to remove the driver's door of the auto to free the injured driver. Greene was taken by First Call EMS to the Newport Medical Center, however, a hospital spokesperson refused to release the condition of Ms. Greene.
