Fatal crash investigation continuing
Cocke County, Newport and federal investigators are involved in the investigation of two separate weekend incidents involving counterfeit money. Cocke County Narcotics Captain Chuck Evans says he was contacted by the US Marshals Service after agents went to the residence of Mark Evans, 38, Caney Creek Raod, Cosby to arrest him on a federal supervised release violation. At the home, officers found a large number of counterfeit bills, as well as packaged methamphetamine and a package of unidentified white powder in the possession of Evans. The powder later was identified as heroin. Inside the home, Officer Evans located another bag of suspected methamphetamine. He also found eight $20 bills, bearing the same serial number, along with nine $10 bills bearing the same serial number, and believed to be counterfeit. The officer later found more $10 and $20 bills bearing the same serial numbers. Now Evans faces state charges of possession of heroin and methamphetamine, as well as possession of counterfeit currency. He was previously convicted of a federal counterfeiting charge. On Saturday, Newport authorities were called to Walmart to investigate an incident involving the sale of Girl Scout cookies outside of the store. Newport Captain Brad Ball was told two males had purchased five boxes of cookies with $20 bills. The males had approached the Girl Scout table on separate occasions and had purchased one box of cookies each time, receiving $16 in change for each purchase. The incident raised the suspicion of the Girl Scouts and their chaperones, and police were contacted. It is at that point that the bills used in the purchases were identified as counterfeit. Captain Ball said the investigation into the counterfeit currency and theft is continuing.
