Tennessee legislature wants to curb environmental efforts
While some cities in Tennessee want to control items that are hazardous to the environment, the Tennessee legislature is considering a bill that would do the opposite. Some lawmakers want to prevent local municipalities from regulating plastic bags and utensils. House lawmakers on Monday passed a proposal that would make it illegal for local governments to impose bag bans, restrictions on Styrofoam containers and other disposable products that are hazardous to the environment. Memphis and Nashville have recently considered controlling single-use plastic bags, but plastic bag manufacturers oppose the move. Democratic members opposed the bill, arguing the General Assembly should not regulate local government decisions.
