Douglas Lake cleanup
A Douglas Lake Clean-Up, sponsored by Keep Cocke County Beautiful, was held last Saturday. KCCB Executive Director Meka Henderson said four volunteers, gathered to clean the lake bottoms and surrounding areas of Douglas Lake. One dumpsite had previously been cleaned up by the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department litter crew, yielding 60 bags of litter. On Saturday, volunteers picked up 44 bags of litter along with debris from several dumpsites along the lake bottoms. The total litter picked up totaled 104 bags, which equaled about 2,600 pounds of trash. "There is much more trash to be picked up from the lake bottoms, and this is a task that not just a few people can handle on their own, it requires several volunteers," says Henderson. Many visitors use the Douglas Lake in the summer months. In fact, during the clean-up, two visitors from Illinois came to the lake to fish. "Wouldn’t it be wonderful to put our best foot forward and clean-up the litter so that visitors are left with a positive impression of Cocke County? If more participation is not garnered in the future, Keep Cocke County Beautiful may have to cancel the Douglas Lake Clean-Up," adds Henderson. On another note, she reminds local residents that April 27th is spring cleaning time for Cocke County. KCCB’s Household Hazardous Waste Event, held in the Lowe’s Parking lot, from 9 am till 1 pm, will expand to accept virtually anything; recyclables, metal, clothing and electronics. In addition, if you have good usable items or non-perishable food items, KCCB will get them to the organizations in need. Of special focus, if you have a tattered flag, please bring it and KCCB will dispose of it in a proper manner.
