Marriage counselors
A pending bill in the Tennessee General Assembly would allow 130 state lawmakers and about 1,700 city or town council members to perform marriages in Tennessee. But lawmakers are concerned about lots of couples wanting them to preside over their ceremonies, and requirements to counsel couples beforehand the wedding. Those who can currently perform a marriage include the governor, speakers of the state House and Senate, current and retired judges, county and city mayors, the county clerks who issue marriage licenses and county commissioners. Along with spiritual leaders. Lawmakers also are concerned that the legislation would allow those performing a marriage to charge a fee.
