New drivers licenses
If you are going to fly, enter a federal courthouse or access a military base after October 1, 2020, you will need an upgraded driver's license. Tennessee Department of Safety officials say they will begin offering residents the option to upgrade their driver's license starting July 1 to meet the federal requirements. Tennesseans aren't required to get the upgraded driver's licenses, however, the Real-ID compliant-cards will be needed on Oct. 1, 2020. The Real ID is less susceptible to forgery and requires proof of U.S. residency. Several lawmakers said they are concerned that the state will not have enough staff to handle possible increased drivers license lines, however department officials say they have enough time to handle the demand.
