Newport Broadway repaving
Initial plans were to begin repaving East Broadway through downtown Newport on Monday, however Newport City Planning Director Gary Carver now says work will not begin until Tuesday morning. Carver said he met with TDOT and Summers Taylor Contractors on Friday, with the understanding that the work will be done at night to make for less disruption to traffic flow. “They can't get asphalt at night, unfortunately, so they are going to begin at 6 am Tuesday morning at Walgreen's,” Carver said. “They'll be closing a block at a time to mill about 300 feet and then pave behind it.” The planner said negotiations are underway to reach a consensus on when to stop the paving work and re-open the roadway for afternoon traffic, likely around 3 pm. Plans are to resurface the roadway to the Eastport bridge and the project should be completed by the end of April.
