Cocke County School Board
Members of the Cocke County School Board meeting Thursday evening approved a contract extension for Director of Schools Manney Moore. He has been in the post since 2008. Cocke County Legislative Body member Forrest Clevenger called on the school board to revitalize the operation of the Family Resource Center(FRC). The Center is tasked with working with public and private sector services to "strengthen families' abilities to support academic and life success for all children." Clevenger said one of the highest priorities of the Center should be tackling absenteeism, along with socio-economic issues. "They form a coalition to reach out to private businesses, they use the courts, child services, churches, every resource they can get to help." The commissioner said he himself struggled through school and he called on the board to establish a council to oversee the operation of the local FRC, saying grants are available if the Center is operated within state guidelines. " We hear that about 50 percent of the kids in our local schools are not going to make it, and the others will go to college, and do make it. I don't want to think the other fifty percent are discarded. I want to think there is a program in place that can reach out and pick these kids up, and maybe save a small percentage of them. Even if it's just one kid out of each class, we can pick up and show him how to turn his life around."
