Run For The Wall
About 400 motorcycles, participating in the 31st. Annual Run For The Wall, stopped off Tuesday afternoon in Cocke County to refuel, on their way to Washington D.C. The ride honors past and current members of the armed forces. Spokesperson for the ride, Les Williams of Colorado, said the ride follows three routes, with the midway route, traveling through Cocke County on I-40. The route began in Ontario, California and will end the ten-day trip on Friday. Events are planned for Friday and Saturday at the Vietnam Wall and Arlington National Cemetary. Sunday morning for the first time, the Run participants will head to the Middle Eastern Conflicts Wall in Marseilles, Illinois. "We are going to do this for our current conflicts warriors who do not have a healing wall. When they lose a battle buddy they want to know that, that guy or gal is not forgotten. Right now they don't have that in Washington." Williams said a wall honoring the victims of the current conflicts will not have a wall in Washington until ten years after the conflict has ended. " And the rate that Afghanistan is going, it's never going to end." There have been reports that this will be the last year for Run For The Wall, however Williams says that is not true. A similar ride, Rolling Thunder will end this year. Next year he says, a fourth route will be added for the Run. The cycles were re-fueled free of charge at the Downtown Hartford Citgo, which is owned by Harold Cates. "This is a great group of people, who are honoring POW and MIAs, and all veterans. We love to see them, and we are glad to have them in Hartford," said Cates.
