Asheville men face Lowes theft charges
Three Asheville, North Carolina residents face charges in a number of jurisdictions, stemming from a Tuesday arrest in Newport. Newport police received reports that the trio had stolen six boxes of various power tools from the Lowe's store on Epley Road, and a short time later Detective Derrick Webb spotted the getaway car. The vehicle was spotted parked along eastbound I-40 as two of the subjects changed the tag on the auto. The officer observed Joshua Allen Byrd, 36; Rusty James Pearson, 24 and Ricky Edward Smith, 54, all of whom were taken into custody. Pearson said he was to receive 20 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the stolen items valued at $1,474. Byrd told investigators he had been involved in similar criminal activity in other areas. As a result, all of the defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit theft over $1,000 and theft over $1,000. On Wednesday Newport Detective Jason Ramsey said the men were involved in similar thefts from Lowes stores in Jefferson City, Johnson City, Jonesboro and Elizabethton, and so they and accomplices face similar charges there.
