Newport City Council
The Newport City Council meeting Tuesday was reminded that the Rhythm on the River oncert series kicks off the season this evening on the Riverwalk behind city hall. City Administrator James Finchum said the free entertainment will be provided by the Marshall Law Band beginning at 7 pm, sponsored by the Partnership Chamber of Commerce. The Newport Kiwanis club will be selling food as a fundraiser for area kids and The Rustic Cow will be selling ice cream. City Planner Gary Carver said plans are for a pre-construction meeting with the firm which will rehab the former Tanner School, and the timeframe for the project is being developed. The body approved the 2019/20 budget on final reading. Members ok'ed the issuance of, not to exceed $65 million in bonds, for Newport Utilities. General Manager Glenn Ray said the bonds will replace two previous temporary bond issues. The bonds are expected to be issued at an interest rate of about 3.5 percent for 28 years. The funding is for the Electric Department, not for the fiber network. The liquor license for the West End Package store was transferred to Mitch and Mack McCarter. Alderman Mike Hansel called on his fellow council members to use discretion in naming a street after a business. He pointed out when a firm leaves, renaming the street, producing new signs and issuing new addresses, costs money. "I don't think we should randomly change the name of a street to suit a single business," argued Hansel.
