NU power outage The Newport Utilities electric system experienced widespread outages, early Saturday morning as a storm passed through the area. Curtis Williamson, manager of the Electric Department said the storm front resulted in broken poles and fallen power lines. "Our system had a peak outage count of over 5500 customers. All service area communities were impacted, and we continue to receive new outages," he said at 3:30 am. Williamson cautioned residents to avoid crossing downed power lines, and added: "We thank everyone for their patience, as crews continue to work diligently to restore power in all areas involved." Several damage incidents were reported to the Newport Police Department.
