NU power outage
The Newport Utilities electric system experienced widespread outages, early Saturday morning as a storm passed through the area. Curtis Williamson, manager of the Electric Department said the storm front resulted in broken poles and fallen power lines. "Our system had a peak outage count of over 5500 customers. All service area communities were impacted, and we continue to receive new outages," he said at 3:30 am. Williamson cautioned residents to avoid crossing downed power lines, and added: "We thank everyone for their patience, as crews continue to work diligently to restore power in all areas involved." Several damage incidents were reported to the Newport Police Department. Kathy Childs, Prospect Avenue, reported her 2003 Dodge was damaged by a tree which fell from a neighboring property, and Ellen Williamson of Union Cemetary told police that several tombstones were damaged by a tree which fell from a neighbors property.
