A Cocke County man who jumped into the Pigeon River following a pursuit by Newport Police on Saturday now faces several charges. Newport Patrol Officer Chris Silvers said he observed Billy hance, 47, Old Sevierville Highway, Newport traveling at a high rate of speed on Second Street. The officer attempted a traffic stop but Hance fled, traveling through several stop signs at a high rate of speed and eventually driving through a lawn on River Road before stopping and jumping into the river. The suspect swam away and so the Newport Rescue Squad was asked to bring a boat to the scene. The boat wasn't needed however because Hance swam to shore and was taken into custody. Hance complained of chest pains but he was examined by personnel with First Call EMS and then jailed. A passenger in the auto, Melissa Harris, Clear Creek Road, Parrottsville told Officer Silvers that she had asked Hance to stop during the pursuit but he said he was wanted and he told Harris to "hang on." Police say the subject was wanted on a warrant charging him with aggravated assault. Now Hance is charged additionally with kidnapping, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, no insurance or seatbelt, felony fleeing to evade arrest and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
