Infant death in Newport
Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults on Monday announced that his department and The Tennessee Department of Children's Services are investigating the death of an infant child, that occurred on Sunday, July 7. At approximately 2:30 am, Central Dispatch received a call requesting an ambulance to be sent to Motel 6 on Heritage Boulevard in Newport. The caller advised that a child was not breathing and was non-responsive. When Newport Police Officers arrived at the motel the infant child's mother met them in the lobby with the child. Newport Patrol Officer Brandon Cassady initiated CPR lifesaving efforts which continued until he was relieved by personnel with First Call EMS. The child was transported to the Newport Medical Center where life-saving efforts continued. "Unfortunately the infant child was pronounced dead by medical personnel at approximately 3:30 am," the chief said. The 37 day-old infant was a resident of Beulaville, North Carolina. An autopsy was performed Monday on the infant at the Regional Forensic Center in Knoxville. According to Chief Shults, the preliminary autopsy did not reveal any physical trauma and there does not appear to be any foul play involved in the child's death, however the investigation is continuing.
