Jenkins crash
One man sustained minor injuries Friday afternoon when his pickup truck went out of control, and backed down Summitt Ridge Drive, striking a gas line and rupturing it. According to a report released on Monday by Newport Captain Matthew Elliott, Charles Jenkins, 87, was backing his 2003 Ford pickup from his driveway when he says the accelerator stuck causing him to lose control. The homeowner, David Hill had assisted Mr. Jenkins from his truck which had struck the gas line in the utility building adjacent to the Hill home. Captain Elliott said there was a very strong odor of natural gas in the area, and so area streets were closed for several hours. In addition homes in a several block area were evacuated as a safety precaution until employees of Jefferson/Cocke County Gas Utility could dig up the line and clamp off the leak. Jenkins declined transport to the hospital and no charges were filled.
