Tennova Healthcare recently welcomed Jeffrey A. Mathews, M.D., general surgeon, to his new medical practice at Tennova General Surgery – Newport. Dr. Mathews is accepting new patients at his office at 434 Fourth Street, Suite 201, Newport. Same-week appointments are available. To schedule an appointment, call 423-623-0419. Dr. Mathews is experienced in a wide range of general surgery procedures and techniques. He specializes in minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopy and colonoscopy. Dr. Mathews has a special interest in hernia, gallbladder, thyroid, appendix, colon and breast surgeries for both benign and malignant diseases. He performs surgery exclusively at Newport Medical Center. Dr. Mathews received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis and completed a surgical residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga. He is board certified in general surgery. Prior to relocating to East Tennessee, Dr. Mathews was in private practice in Lebanon, TN. "The focus of my practice includes advanced surgical procedures—including those that can be performed through a single site," Dr. Mathews said. "For my patients, these minimally invasive techniques mean smaller scars—or, in some cases, no scars whatsoever—and a faster recovery and return to normal activities."
