Rural Medical hosts stakeholder luncheon
Rural Medical Services, with five locations in Cocke and Jefferson Counties, on Wednesday hosted a stakeholders luncheon. Chief Operating Officer Kelly Melear-Hough, told the attendees that this is National Health Center Week, and her organization is "Rooted in Community". "What makes us different is that we get a federal grant, which doesn't cover all of our costs, but it covers about 24 percent of our budget. That grant allows us to see patients without regard of their ability to pay," she told the gathering. Attendees were told that a large percentage of patients at health centers in the state fall under the poverty guidelines. Melear Houge said Rural Medical Services sees 10,000 patients annually with a total of 40,000 visits. The program in addition to medical services, provides assistance to help patients make smart self-help healthcare decisions, behavioral services, social service assistance to find needed auxiliary services in the community, provides migrant farmworker services and provides assistance to residents of the community in finding health insurance.
