Push for stricter gun regulations
Dozens of mostly Democratic state lawmakers from Tennessee, Ohio and other states rallied Wednesday on the steps of the Tennessee Capitol. They call;ed on other lawmakers in joining them to act quickly against gun violence following last weekend's two mass shootings. "All across the country, people are worried. They're worried for the safety of their children," Tennessee House Democratic Caucus Chairman Mike Stewart said. "And yet we have many politicians who are saying 'we can't do anything, we need to go slow, we don't need to take actions.'" The 70 lawmakers are in Nashville this week attending the annual meeting of the nonpartisan National Conference of State Legislatures. Pointing to the lack of action in Washington, the legislators called for passage of state universal background check laws to close loopholes for gun purchasers. They also called for "red flag" laws which authorize judges to temporarily take firearms from those determined to be a danger to themselves or others, at the request of police or families. But on Wednesday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said he is not ready to support a law to remove guns from dangerous individuals.
