Abortion bill
Tennessee Senate Republicans and abortion rights opponents are in disagreement over a proposed near-total abortion ban that would be one of the nation's strictest, with a National Right to Life legal expert warning the law would be unconstitutional. The Republican led Senate Judiciary Committee members heard testimony on Monday and it is continuing today. The bill relies on blood and urine tests to detect a hormone that can show up as early as 11 days after conception. It seeks to redefine a fetus' viability, the point at which it can survive outside the womb, barring an abortion. The bill would not allow for the abortion of a fetus that is not viable or in the case of rape.
